Anxiety Treatments – What Will Work For You?
If you suffer from anxiety you will know how debilitating it can be. It can rule almost every aspect of your life, work, home, leisure time, relationships; all of them can suffer if you have anxiety or an anxiety disorder. So what is the best way to cure anxiety and get your life back on track?
Every one of us is different; we have developed anxiety in our own way. The experiences, problems or traumas that we have suffered are all different to other people, unique to us. So it follows that our route back to a balanced, happy life is likely to be different as well. Finding the best way to recover from anxiety is important and is well worth some thought before you start making changes to your lifestyle.
There are a number of anxiety treatments that focus on the short term. They deal very effectively with the symptoms but leave the underlying problem untouched. Having been an anxiety sufferer for many years, I know that if you want to be rid of anxiety once and for all, you need to treat the underlying anxiety disorder and not just pacify the symptoms. I had returning bouts of anxiety over several years before I realised that I was doing exactly that, using a short term fix rather than treating the disorder.
Medication is often prescribed by doctors to treat the symptoms of anxiety. Medication alone is unlikely to help. If you are suffering from severe anxiety it will certainly help you to calm things down. This will put you in a better position to start some type of therapy. So medication is only part of the picture and needs to be taken as a short term aid whilst you look at some type of therapy to deal with the underlying anxiety disorder..
The same applies to herbal remedies. Some of them will help with the symptoms but if you are looking for a cure from a herbal remedy for anxiety you will look in vain. They may help to reduce the symptoms but you need to be looking at a long term solution at the same time.
Meditation and relaxation techniques again will teach you how to deal with the short term effects of anxiety. They will help you to control your breathing and stop your heart racing. These techniques can be very effective at controlling the symptoms and helping you to feel in control when you have an anxiety attack, but they will not cure the underlying anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders are learnt behaviour. However we have managed to do it, we have programmed ourselves to react badly or over-react to stress. It is only when we retrain ourselves to react appropriately to stress that we can hope to cure our anxiety.
Some forms of counselling will do this. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is having great results. With this you are helped to become more self aware, learning what is happening to you whenever you experience anxiety. Through this self awareness, you will learn new behaviours, new ways of reacting to stress and pressure.. This works well for a large number of people.
The method that I used to finally overcome my own anxiety after many years was through self help anxiety programmes. Most of them work in the same way that counselling does, focussing on retraining your mind to react properly to stress. By educating you about your condition and again raising your self awareness. These self help programmes have helped many thousands of people to get their lives back on track.
One word of caution though. Whenever something is successful, people will try to copy it. If you do decide on a self help programme, go for one with a track record, that has been around for a few years and has proved itself.
Whichever of the many anxiety treatments you try, just make sure that it is treating the anxiety disorder and not just the symptoms. That way you can look forward to never experiencing it again.
