Can you Overcome Anxiety and Return to Normal?
First of all I would like to explain what I mean by overcoming anxiety. Nearly everyone feels anxious to some extent. It is Each anxiety problem is unique to the person who suffers from it. All of us have arrived at our anxious state in our own unique way with our own memories and experiences. The one thing that they all have in common is that the brain has stopped responding normally to anxiety. We are programmed to react to anxiety in a certain way, this is our natural reaction to it. The greater the threat the bigger the reaction, so when you start to develop an anxiety disorder it is simply that your body has started to over react to what it perceives as a threat, whether this threat is real or not.
To start to conquer your anxiety all you need to do is retrain your brain to start reacting normally again. That sounds simple enough but as anyone who suffers from anxiety will tell you, it is a big step to take and often difficult to do. You will first need to understand what is happening to you physically when you become anxious and accept that this is perfectly normal. The increased heart rate, palpitations, trembling, hot and cold flushes, pins and needles and trembling are all normal reactions to extreme stress. The problem is that we start to experience some or all of these symptoms when we are only moderately anxious. By realising that these reactions are normal and not the start of some serious illness we take the fear out of the anxiety and take a big step towards getting it under control.
Anxiety is a naturally intuitive reaction to any situation. By becoming more aware of your self and your reactions you can start to behave differently and retrain your brain to react appropriately. Forms of cognitive behavioural therapy, self help programmes and mental exercises to help with this are now the accepted route to overcoming anxiety dis-orders.
